GoDaddy.com Inc, the world's largest domain name registration company, is planning to announce that it will stop registering domain names in China following a new government policy that requires extensive information about registrants. Individuals wishing to register a .CN domain name were being asked to submit a photograph identifying themselves as well as a serial number identifying their business license in China. This information will also be required retroactively.
These new requirements are believed to be part of a larger effort by the Chinese Government increase monitoring and surveillance of website and internet content.
