Twitter To Have Paid Search Ads

There has been a lot of talk about Twitter's options for advertising and further monetization. Twitter will be announcing a new program that will place paid search ads within users' Twitter streams. The program will be called "Promoted Tweets" and it more of a non-traditional approach to advertising.

The Twitter Blog contains some outline of the program: " You will start to see Tweets promoted by our partner advertisers called out at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages. We strongly believe that Promoted Tweets should be useful to you. We'll attempt to measure whether the Tweets resonate with users and stop showing Promoted Tweets that don't resonate."

Essentially, Twitter wants to ensure that the ads closely match the content and suit their user's tastes and expectations--so as not to detract from the simplicity of the micro-blogging service. Twitter describes the program as "ordinary Tweets that businesses and organizations want to highlight to a wider group of users".

Some of the initial brands that have signed up already include: Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America.
