Amazon's e-book future, a scary outlook

A recent article from Wired, Will iPad Knock Out Kindle? Numbers Aren’t Pretty for Amazon, presents some pretty interesting data from a recent report by ChangeWave Research, which paints a scary picture for Amazon's Kindle e-reader.

The research shows that the iPad is quickly gaining on the Kindle. For example, in the next 30 days, 42 percent of the respondents stated that they were planning on buying an iPad whereas only 33 percent said they would opt for the Kindle.

Amazon has responded to the iPad's popularity by launching an app for the Apple device, which has resulted in a surge a e-book sales for Amazon.

Earlier this year, an analyst for Credit Suisse, Spencer Wang, prophesized that Amazon's market share for e-books will drop from 90 percent to 35 percent by 2015 (AllThingsD: John Paczkowski, February 17, 2010, Amazon’s Share of the E-Book Market: From 90 Percent to 35 Percent in Five Years).

One thing that is pretty clear is that e-books will become more mainstream.
