Hundreds of hackers and internet activists have banded together in retaliation against the websites of multinational companies who had been hostile to Wikileaks. Included in this group of activists were a group known as Anonymous who conducted the “denial of service” attack against Mastercard. Among other companies targeted in the attacks were Visa, Paypal and Amazon--each playing a role in the destruction of the Wikileaks infrastructure. The activitists used social networks, primarily Facebook and Twitter, to build their cyberwar campaign. The resulting onslaught brought those websites to a crawl and at moments made them unavailable to the public.
