Facebook's timeline causes concern over web privacy

According to a recent USA Today poll, frequent Facebook users are less likely to be concerned about privacy invasion than less frequent users of the social site. The recent USA TODAY/Gallup Poll telephone survey interviewed more than 2,000 adults.

The essential results of the poll included:

  • Only 26% of those interviewed who use Facebook daily were "very concerned" about privacy
  • For users that check the social website weekly, about 35% were expressly concerned about privacy issues
  • 39% of less frequent users have concerns of privacy

The recent Facebook inventions, the Timeline and Open Graph, are raising concerns over user privacy. Civil rights groups and privacy advocates as well as several politicians have demanded that the Federal Trade Commission begin to investigate Facebook's tracking software.

One of the most fascinating outcomes of the survey was a finding that 56% of the users dislike the new Facebook features as opposed to the 36% who preferred the recent site updates.

Note: The USA TODAY/Gallup Poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
