WordPress 3.6 Rolls Out a Slew of New, Exciting Features

This week, WordPress.org announced the release of WordPress 3.6. The Open-Source CMS, which claims to power almost one-fifth of the web, has grad plans for developing as a significant publishing platform, The release of version 3.6 brings the content management system that much closer.wordpress-logo-notext-rgb

Among the numerous enhancements is a revamped Revision Browser to better support site administrators manage legacy and archived content. The interface also has a revised blog-centric theme.

Named “Oscar” in honor of Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, WordPress 3.6 now includes better autosave, post locking, native support for audio and video embeds via an HTML5 media player, and improved integrations with such audio sources as Spotify, Rdio, and SoundCloud.

Newly added features include:

  • A new theme theme puts the focus on content with a single-column design made for media-rich blogging.
  • Revamped Revisions save every change and allows an administrator to scroll through changes to see line-by-line which authors have changed what and when the changes were made.
  • Post Locking and Augmented Autosave add significant upgrades where more than a single author is working on a post. Each author has their own autosave stream, and it's now easy to take over editing of a post from another author.
  • A built-in HTML5 media player allows for native audio and video embeds with no reliance on third party applications or external services.
  • A new audio/video API gives you access to metadata like ID3 tags.
  • The Menu Editor has been significantly updated.
