Mobile's growing impact on digital marketing, a trend report

Mobile usage is growing. Users are relying on their phones for everything from email, games, photos, search, reading, news, etc, etc. The list is long.

This expanding role in the lives of consumers impacts marketing significantly. Mobile is evolving the digital marketing practice. A new report by eConsultancy and SEMPO, State of Search Marketing Report 2013, provides some insight into this mobile impact on digital marketing.

The study by eConsultancy/SEMPO asked participants to explain the impact of various trends and technologies on paid search, SEO, display, social media marketing, and email marketing. Mobile was a clear impact--headlining four of those areas.

  • About 9 in 10 companies stated that the impact of consumers’ growing mobile use as highly significant (49%) or significant (40%)
  • Mobile did not seem to highly impact SEO efforts
  • For social media marketing, mobile plays a large role. 8 in 10 business marketers stated that mobile’s impact on social media efforts is highly significant (42%) or significant (40%)
  • Email marketing: certainly mobile plays a tremendous role in email marketing, as the majority of all emails are opened on a mobile device.
