90% of Holiday Shoppers Will Purchase Online

The National Retail Federation recently released a survey regarding online holiday shopping and found that 56 percent of shoppers have plans to purchase items online. However, PunchTab, a company that provides technology for CPG and retail brands, has an even greater number. After surveying 1,000 consumers, they claim that 90 percent of participants have plans to shop online this season.

The percentage of those planning to purchase items online varies greatly by age group:

Baby Boomers:

  • 46 percent said more than 50 but less than 100 percent of their shopping would be done online
  • 40 percent said less than 50 percent would be done online
  • Only 5 percent said all of their shopping would be done online

Gen X

  • 52 percent said more than 50 but less than 100 percent of their shopping would be done online
  • 37 percent said less than 50 percent would be done online
  • As with Baby Boomers, only 5 percent said all of their shopping would be done online

Millennials

  • 58 percent said more than 50 but less than 100 percent of their shopping would be done online
  • 31 percent said less than 50 percent would be done online
  • Similar to the previous two, only 6 percent said all of their shopping would be done online

The survey also asked what the spending plan was across all age groups, and 77 percent responded that they would be spending “about the same” or more than the previous year.

To which online retailers will consumers’ money be going? Here’s how they answered:

  • Amazon – 75%
  • Target – 47%
  • Walmart – 39%
  • Barnes &Noble – 29%
  • Best Buy – 27%
  • Kohl’s – 27%
  • Macy’s – 22%
  • Bed Bath & Beyond – 21%
  • Bath & Body Works – 20%
  • eBay – 19%

Finally, 62 percent said that they plan to shop on Cyber Monday, and 52 percent said they plan to shop online the Monday after Thanksgiving. Three percent said they plan to shop in store, and 7 percent said they would be shopping both in store and online.
